What to Install, What It Costs, and How to Charge Cheap
Almost all EV charging happens at home, overnight, while you sleep — public fast chargers are for road trips, not daily life. Getting home charging set up right is the single biggest lever on both convenience and cost, which is why it's worth understanding before you buy the car, not after.
The Three Charging Levels
Level 1 — The Outlet You Already Have
Every EV comes with a cable that plugs into a standard 120V household outlet. It adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour — enough overnight to cover a short commute, but too slow to reliably refill a battery from low if you drive more than that. Good as a free backup, not ideal as your only option.
Level 2 — The Real Home Setup
A 240V Level 2 charger — the same voltage as an electric dryer outlet — adds roughly 20–30+ miles of range per hour, enough to fully charge most EVs overnight. This is what nearly every EV owner ends up installing, and it's the setup our calculator's "Level 2 Install" cost field is based on.
DC Fast Charging — For Road Trips
Public fast chargers push far more power and can add 10–80% battery in roughly 15–40 minutes. They're not meant for daily use (and frequent fast charging modestly speeds up battery degradation — see our battery lifespan research), but they're what make long trips practical.
What Installation Actually Costs
A Level 2 charger plus professional installation typically runs $500–$1,500 total, depending on how far your electrical panel is from where you park and whether your panel has spare capacity. Get a quote from a licensed electrician before committing — panel upgrades, if needed, are the main thing that pushes costs higher.
No dedicated 240V circuit, or renting? A portable Level 2 charger plugs into an existing NEMA 14-50 outlet (the kind used for RVs or electric dryers) and gets you most of the speed of a hardwired unit with zero installation cost, and you can take it with you.
Charging on the Cheapest Electricity
Many utilities offer Time-of-Use (TOU) rates where overnight electricity costs 50–75% less than daytime rates — see our incentives page for how to find your utility's program. Most Level 2 chargers let you schedule charging to start after peak hours automatically; if yours doesn't, a smart plug or outlet timer can do the same job for a Level 1 or portable setup.

Can I install my own EV charging point?
For a Level 1 setup, yes — it plugs into a standard outlet you already have, no electrician needed. For a hardwired Level 2 charger, most manufacturers and insurers require a licensed electrician to run the 240V circuit and mount the unit, both for safety (240V wiring can be dangerous to install incorrectly) and to keep any manufacturer or home warranty valid. The one DIY-friendly middle ground is a portable Level 2 charger — if you already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet (common for RVs or electric dryers), you can plug it in yourself with no electrical work at all.
