"EVs Are Cheaper to Maintain"
Where That's True, and the Two Places It Isn't
This is one of the few EV claims that skews too optimistic rather than too skeptical — "an EV is basically maintenance-free" isn't quite right either. The honest version: EVs save real money on routine maintenance, but there are two categories where they can actually cost more.
The Data
Consumer Reports' ownership-cost analysis found that lifetime maintenance and repair costs for battery-electric vehicles average roughly $4,600, compared to about $9,200 for gas-powered vehicles — on a per-mile basis, roughly $0.031/mile for EVs versus $0.061/mile for gas cars. That's close to half.

Where EVs Genuinely Save You Money
- No oil changes. No engine means no oil, oil filters, or the labor to change them.
- No spark plugs, timing belts, or exhaust system. An EV drivetrain has a fraction of the moving parts of an internal combustion engine, which means fewer things to wear out or fail.
- Longer brake life. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing-down work, so friction brake pads often last two to three times longer than on a comparable gas car.
Where EVs Can Cost More
Two categories work against EVs, and a fair myth-check has to include them:
- Tires. EV weight and instant torque wear tires meaningfully faster — commonly every 25,000–30,000 miles versus 40,000+ for a gas car. EV-specific tire models help close this gap but don't eliminate it. Our calculator prices this in directly rather than hiding it.
- Collision and specialized repair. Body damage that touches the battery pack, and repairs requiring EV-trained technicians, can cost more and take longer than equivalent gas-car repairs simply because fewer shops are equipped and certified for it yet. This gap is shrinking as EV-trained technicians become more common, but it's real today.
The Practical Takeaway
For routine, scheduled maintenance — the stuff you pay for every few thousand miles regardless of what happens to the car — EVs are meaningfully cheaper, and the Consumer Reports numbers back that up clearly. For the less frequent stuff — tires and collision repair — the picture is closer to a wash or a slight EV disadvantage. Neither side of the myth tells the whole story on its own.
The Bottom Line
"Cheaper to maintain" holds up well as a general claim, backed by real ownership-cost data — it just isn't cheaper in every single category. Tires and collision repair are the honest exceptions worth budgeting for.
